eCall Certification Process & Timeline (2026)

2026-03-26

Beginning in 2026, all eCall certifications follow the NG eCall standard. Processes and timelines are significantly different from legacy systems.

I. Certification Steps (Component vs. Vehicle)

1. Planning & Sample Preparation (1–2 weeks)

Freeze NG eCall design, prepare 2–3 production samples, gather schematics, BOM, firmware, and module certificates.

2. Technical File Submission (1–2 weeks)

Complete TCF documentation, appoint an EU Authorized Representative, and file with a Notified Body.

3. Pre-Testing & Optimization (1–3 weeks)

Validate trigger, positioning, IMS, battery, and network handover — critical to avoid retests.

4. Formal Lab Testing (3–6 weeks)

Testing per EN 16072, EN 17184, EN 17240, UN R144.

5. On-Road Validation (1–2 weeks)

Real-network call success, positioning, and handover testing.

6. Notified Body Review (2–4 weeks)

Report audit and compliance verification.

7. Certification Issuance

Component certificates: valid 3 yearsVehicle certificates: valid for the model lifecycle

  II. 2026 Realistic Timeline

·Components (T-Box, module): 8–14 weeks

·Complete vehicle: 12–20 weeks

  III. Major Pitfalls to Avoid

·No more 2G/3G designs

·Backup battery must support strict runtime requirements

·Positioning accuracy < 3 meters

·Complete and consistent technical documents

·Allow extra time for NG eCall’s additional test phases
