EU 2017/79 eCall Certification Process & Cycle

Two certification paths are available for EU 2017/79 eCall: whole vehicle WVTA path and independent STU component certification path.

1. Two Certification Paths

·Whole Vehicle WVTA: For automakers, eCall is assessed as part of vehicle type approval

·Independent STU Certification: For T-Box/IVS suppliers, valid for 3 years, reusable for host factory whole vehicle certification

  2. Four Certification Stages

Stage 1: Pre-preparation

Confirm technical solution (CS/NG eCall), complete technical documents (system design, schematic, software spec, risk assessment) within 4-6 weeks. Appoint EU authorized representative in advance.

Stage 2: Lab Testing

Core tests: collision trigger simulation, MSD transmission, voice quality, backup battery endurance, EMC and environmental reliability. No real vehicle crash test needed.

·CS eCall test cycle: 4-6 weeks

·NG eCall test cycle: 6-8 weeks (more IMS/VoNR test items)

Stage 3: Certification Review

Authority reviews documents and test reports within 2-4 weeks; complete documents reduce inquiry rounds and speed up approval.

·Whole vehicle certificate: Valid with vehicle lifecycle

·STU component certificate: Valid for 3 years

Stage 4: Continuous Compliance

Maintain production consistency records for random inspection. Distinguish minor software upgrade (only declaration) and core hardware/protocol change (supplementary certification).

  3. Certification Overall Cycle

·CS eCall: 3-5 months

·NG eCall: 4-6 months1-2 months completion is only extreme individual cases, not conventional standard.

  4. Key 2026 Regulatory Nodes

·2026.01.01: Ban on new CS eCall certification application

·New projects must adopt NG eCall complying with EN 17184:2024 & EN 17240:2024
