I've seen HiCar certification done in as little as 2.5 months – and I've seen projects drag on for 10 months. What makes the difference? You might not believe it – it has very little to do with lab efficiency – it's your product type and your preparation.
Front‑load OEM projects are slow – aftermarket projects are faster – I've never seen an exception. But regardless of speed, every step in the process can trip you up. This article walks through the entire process – from Huawei Developer registration to final approval – what to do at each step and where the traps are.
The first step in HiCar certification is becoming a Huawei ecosystem partner. The barrier looks low – but it can take 2–3 weeks.
1. Corporate account verification
Complete enterprise verification on the Huawei Developer Alliance. Prepare your business licence and legal representative ID. Tax registration certificates are now merged into the business licence – no separate document needed. Business scope: Huawei does not require "automotive" to be listed – any legally operating company can register – no need to go through business‑scope changes.
2. Sign MOU and security‑compliance agreement
After verification, sign the HiCar Ecosystem Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and related agreements. The MOU is signed electronically – no physical copies. This MOU covers not just commercial terms – it also enables access to technical documentation and the test system portal. After signing, Huawei activates your DevicePartner platform permissions.
From registration submission to full access – with no issues: 7–10 working days. If documents are returned for correction – over a month. We recommend completing this at least two weeks before SDK integration – don't complete development only to find your account isn't ready.
In 2026, Huawei has tightened controls over post‑release software version management – the certificate is only valid for one year. During registration, ensure contact details and corporate email are correct – this is how communication stays open.
3. Obtain SDK and test templates
Once account permissions are active, download the latest HiCar SDK from the Huawei DevicePartner portal. For new projects submitted after 1 July 2026, V6.0 is mandatory. Projects already started before that date may continue with older SDK versions – it's not a blanket cut‑off.
Also obtain the official self‑test report template – this template is critical – we'll refer to it repeatedly.
二、SDK Integration – The Biggest Time Sink
SDK integration looks straightforward – the traps are everywhere.
1. V6.0 protocol changes
V6.0 has significant changes compared to the previous version:
·84 new test cases – focused on file transfer, phone‑screen mirroring, UI adaptation, audio output, projection, and wireless connection stability.
·78 optimised test cases.
Three features are marked as "mandatory" in V6.0: audio splitting, in‑vehicle OTA capability, and concurrent recording.
However: if the product hardware does not support a feature, you can apply for a function‑trimming exemption – it's not a hard fail if the hardware can't do it. This is critical for low‑cost aftermarket dongle manufacturers – don't blindly add hardware.
V6.0 mandates two phone‑side test baselines – HarmonyOS 4.x and 6.x – self‑testing must cover both, not just one. Head‑unit Android version: V6.0 does not mandate a minimum Android 14 on the head‑unit side – don't apply phone‑side requirements to the head unit. The 12 deprecated‑API replacements and 23 multi‑channel audio APIs only apply to full‑screen desktop and multi‑channel high‑definition audio products – basic connectivity devices do not need to adapt them.
2. Where the time difference comes from
·Pure aftermarket products with standardised hardware – experienced teams familiar with the HiCar stack: roughly 1 month.
·New teams with no HiCar experience – from learning the stack to full self‑test: 2–3 months.
·Front‑load projects – deeply integrated with the vehicle E/E architecture – tied to vehicle development cycles: typically 2–3 months.
The most common development‑stage failure: teams start coding without reading the version update logs. V6.0 requires self‑testing against both HarmonyOS 4.x and 6.x – if you only test against one version, you'll hit compatibility issues at the self‑test stage.
三、Self‑Test Reports – Hard Requirements
Self‑testing must strictly follow Huawei's official template – test‑case coverage must be 100%. Testing alone is not enough – each test case must be accompanied by corresponding log screenshots. A "Pass" without screenshots – Huawei will reject it outright. This is not a suggestion – it's the rule. I've seen projects stuck at self‑test for over a month – simply because test cases weren't fully covered or logs were incomplete. The first thing after obtaining the SDK: print out the self‑test template and check it line by line.
1. Sample submission preparation
Code is done – but materials aren't ready – samples sent to the lab are rejected – this happens more often than you'd think.
2. Aftermarket product sample requirements
·Wired projection and wireless screen devices: 3 finished product samples.
·Software version must match mass production – no changes during testing.
·Samples must be final shipping configuration – no engineering prototypes.
3. Front‑load product sample requirements
Front‑load material requirements are much more complex:
·3 complete test benches – each including: head unit, display, power supply, microphone, speaker, steering‑wheel controls, GPS antenna, and all cables – missing any one and you're rejected.
Whole‑vehicle road testing: not all front‑load projects need it. Only high‑end multi‑screen and dynamic‑navigation scenarios require whole‑vehicle support. If needed, temporary plates only need to cover the test period – there is no mandatory 90‑day requirement – and no full‑tank/full‑charge requirement. These were special requirements for certain high‑end scenarios that have been generalised into myths.
Samples rejected and returned – two weeks lost in logistics and re‑queuing.
四、Lab Testing – The Highest Failure Rate Stage
1. Test timeline
·Front‑load first‑time testing: 4–8 weeks.
·Aftermarket: 3–4 weeks.
·Each remediation round adds 1–2 weeks.
HiCar certification does not assess EMC Class 4 – many people get this wrong. EMC testing (CISPR25/GB34660) is a separate mandatory vehicle‑level hardware compliance system – not part of HiCar acceptance test cases. The lab will not test your EMC during HiCar testing.
2. Equivalent testing – conditions
Huawei offers an equivalent‑test fast track – but not everyone qualifies. Three applicable scenarios:
·Existing head‑unit platform migrated to a new vehicle model.
·Minor software version upgrade on an already‑certified model.
·Aftermarket product – only enclosure changed – core hardware unchanged.
Note: meeting the scenario does not automatically grant equivalent‑test eligibility. You must first submit an equivalent‑test application – the Huawei‑authorised test lab conducts a difference assessment – only after approval can equivalent testing proceed. Many clients send samples assuming equivalence – only to be rejected – this is why.
Chip replacement, major HiCar‑related system version upgrades, or core communication module changes – all disqualify equivalence – full first‑time certification is required.
Equivalent testing waives some test cases – timeline can be compressed to 1–2 months. But confirm with Huawei at the project kick‑off stage.
3. Final review and certificate
The test lab submits the test report and supporting evidence to Huawei's official review team. Huawei conducts final review – verifying test data authenticity – with spot‑checks on critical items if needed.
With genuine data, complete documents, and all metrics passing – review takes roughly 2–3 weeks. Data anomalies or incomplete documents – resubmission extends the timeline.
After approval: 1–2 working days for the electronic certificate. Paper certificates are sent separately.
Certificate validity: one year – renewal is required after one year. Renewal is simplified compared to first‑time certification – but whether it can be fully remote depends on whether software/hardware has changed during the year. Core HiCar hardware/software changes – renewal requires supplementary difference testing or even re‑submission. Only with zero changes can renewal be fully online. Missing the renewal window – certificate expires – full first‑time certification is required again.
