Android Auto certification is about a head unit obtaining Google's official compatibility authorisation, so that a phone can project its navigation, music and calls onto the car's screen. The party being certified is not the app developer but the maker of the head unit. A phone running Android Auto (Android 9 or later) connects and projects straight away, provided the head unit itself has cleared Google's gate.
Keep this separate from Android Automotive OS. The latter is Google's full operating system built into the car; the former is simply phone projection. The two have different technical stacks and different partner entry points, so do not try to push one set of paperwork through both doors - you will end up knocking on the wrong window. Small and mid-sized makers often stall at the Google partner entry point, and starting six months early is steadier than a late scramble.
A head-unit maker first has to enter Google's automotive partner system. The exact contact window and contract terms follow Google's current partner policy; there is no single public application page, so it has to be confirmed with Google's automotive team or an authorised partner. This is where many small makers get stuck.
Once inside, the head unit has to fit the Android compatibility framework. Screen, touch, audio routing, microphone and steering-wheel keys all carry explicit interface requirements, and without them projection will not connect. Microphone noise reduction and echo cancellation are hard metrics too - a call that is unclear in cabin noise fails outright.
Those quantitative thresholds are written into the compatibility test specification Google gives partners: CTS-Auto, derived from the Android Compatibility Definition Document (CDD), together with the Head Unit Integration Guide (HUIG), itemises the judgement values for audio latency and video switching. Build margin against the list rather than chasing the floor.
Google defines a compatibility baseline for Android Auto head units: audio must not drop, touch must respond, an incoming call must switch to the head unit, and navigation must be able to take the main screen. These are not suggestions; they are the hard preconditions for projection to run at all. Audio routing means how call, navigation and music audio paths switch without fighting each other.
Screen resolution, video frame rate and Bluetooth bandwidth all have to match. Leave margin on the parameters rather than building to the lower limit - a bump in real traffic conditions will drop the link, and the user feels it immediately. When video frame rate falls short, projection stutters and the user notices at once. The rework cost is not small.
The Desktop Head Unit (DHU) is Google's development tool. It emulates the head-unit display environment on a computer so the phone-side Android Auto can be run for early interface verification. It emulates the head-unit side; the head unit itself is still real hardware. Formal self-testing runs CTS-Auto item by item on the head unit and then checks against a real phone - the DHU does not replace the real head unit.
Google's backend generates a certification ID or project identifier for the manufacturer to archive internally. The product itself does not print a certification number and no physical paper certificate is issued. Certified head units enter Google's official Android Auto compatible list, which is publicly searchable. What counts is whether you are on that list - a head unit outside it will not project even when the phone connects.
Android Auto is Google-led ecosystem access. It does not replace the mandatory compliance lines such as CE, FCC or radio type approval. A head unit exporting to market still has to clear the regulations it falls under; Android Auto merely sits on top as an experience authorisation. The Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules inside the head unit still need BQB, FCC and CE as before. Among the mandatory regimes, a head unit also has to pass electromagnetic compatibility and radio type approval - two separate processes from Google's authorisation, so do not assume that landing on Google's list exempts you from regional access.
For a head unit aimed at several regions, Google partnership, regional wireless certifications and automotive-grade testing have to be sequenced properly. Multi-region products also stack their own CarPlay and HiCar partnerships, stretching the timeline further - do not discover at mass-production time that the Google gate has not even been started.
Landing on Google's compatible list is not a one-off task. Not every firmware upgrade needs retesting - only changes to Android Auto related modules (audio routing, video output, Bluetooth link, key interaction, protocol stack) require the compatibility run to be repeated. Unrelated firmware, such as a non-communication OTA, does not.
Renaming the product without updating the filing leaves buyers searching and finding a mismatch, which is its own trouble. Multi-region head units also stack their CarPlay and HiCar partnerships, so Google's cycle has to be scheduled separately. Do not squeeze it into the same window as wireless certification, or the two will simply wait on each other.
Do not treat Android Auto as something you "buy a certificate for and then use". It is Google's continuing authorisation for head-unit projection compatibility, so Google partner contact has to begin at project launch - there is no unified public application page, and knocking on the wrong window costs months.
The online claim of "pass once, valid forever" does not hold up. Once on the list, model and firmware changes have to be filed in step, and the certification status lives on maintenance rather than on a certificate.
