After obtaining Huawei SuperCharge certification, many assume the job is done. In reality, certificate validity and renewal rules trip up more companies than the certification process itself. Two years pass, renewal is forgotten, products are still being sold – but Huawei's database shows the certification status has expired. Phones only charge at 5V, and user complaints are the first sign of trouble.
Critical boundary: SuperCharge is Huawei's charger fast‑charge certification – it is independent of HiCar (in‑vehicle connectivity) and HiPlay (in‑vehicle lossless audio). Do not mix them – each has its own process.
The certificate is valid for two years – counted from Huawei's issue date, not the lab test completion date or sample submission date. Some manufacturers use the lab report date as the effective date – miscalculating renewal by one to two months – thinking the certificate is still valid when it has actually expired. Check the expiry date in the Huawei Developer Alliance Accessory Certification database – do not guess.
After certification, product information is synchronised to Huawei's accessory compatibility database. When a phone detects a certified charger, the SCP protocol is automatically activated. Once the certificate expires, the database status becomes invalid – most devices fall back to 5V charging. Older models with legacy HarmonyOS versions may still trigger fast‑charge in isolated cases – but you cannot rely on this.
More critical: the Huawei Ecosystem Framework Agreement must remain active. If the framework agreement expires, even if the product certificate is still within its validity period, database access is closed – fast‑charge will not trigger. Most manufacturers only watch the certificate date – nobody tracks the framework agreement status.
FCP – Huawei's earlier fast‑charge protocol – has long‑term validity for existing certifications and is not forced to upgrade to SCP. For new projects, Huawei is tightening FCP and pushing SCP as the primary route.
2.SuperCharge Renewal – Is It Pure Document Review?
This is where most people get caught.
If the RF solution, fast‑charge main controller, and transformer – three key components – have not changed, renewal is mainly document review and firmware verification. However: Huawei reserves the right to request sample retesting during the review – requiring a small number of protocol items. There is no absolute rule that "hardware unchanged = pure document review." Budget for one or two sample units and a small testing allowance – it's far better than being forced into reactive add‑ons.
If hardware has changed – distinguish severity:
·Replacing the same model/specification fast‑charge IC with identical material code and circuit design – not a major change.
·Changing IC model, brand, or internal protocol stack – major change – requires retesting of corresponding protocol and safety items. Same for transformer replacement. The retest scope is determined by Huawei's change assessment form – not by guesswork.
Another overlooked point: the certificate is tied to the firmware version submitted with the sample. If you push large‑scale OTA updates to charging‑related firmware after mass production, in addition to change filing, Huawei may require sample retesting. Don't focus only on hardware changes – mass‑production OTA management is equally unavoidable.
3.SuperCharge Version Upgrades – Old Certificates Are Not Automatically Invalidated
Huawei's SCP protocol has evolved from 5V/2A to 80W/100W. Protocol version iteration does not automatically invalidate old certificates. A product certified for 40W SCP – with hardware unchanged – remains valid.
Upgrading a 40W product to 80W – at the certification level – is a full new product test suite. Even if the hardware platform natively supports higher power and only firmware limits the tier, you must first submit a hardware architecture assessment – you cannot jump straight to full testing. For in‑vehicle chargers and high‑power scenarios, power upgrades almost always involve thermal and transformer changes – full new certification is the only path.
FCP existing certificates remain valid – Huawei phones will automatically fall back to FCP mode. There is no need to re‑certify FCP products just because SCP exists.
4.SuperCharge – Mid‑Cycle Changes – How to Handle
Firmware changes – do not treat all as the same.
·UI display and indicator‑light changes that do not touch the charging protocol → simple filing – certificate unaffected.
·Changes to over‑voltage protection thresholds, over‑current thresholds, or temperature‑control power‑reduction strategies – even if only firmware parameters – are strongly related to charging safety and are not simple changes. Do not misclassify them. SCP handshake timing, power‑tier parameters, and dynamic load strategy changes – also require partial protocol retesting.
Enclosure changes – not just thermal path assessment. For multi‑port chargers and high‑power models, internal structural adjustments or component spacing changes – even without enclosure changes – affect temperature rise and EMI performance. Temperature‑rise items must be supplemented – do not assume no enclosure change means everything is fine.
5.SuperCharge – Consequences of Expiry
Remember: legal trademark use has two prerequisites:
·Framework agreement active.
·Product SuperCharge certification within validity.
If the framework agreement is terminated but certification is still active – versus having no certification at all – the infringement severity differs. Do not conflate them – but do not overlook the framework agreement.
If the certificate expires and the framework agreement is also terminated – yet you continue printing the logo and selling – Huawei will purchase SuperCharge‑labelled products from platforms for verification testing. If protocol fails, the listing is taken down. For large‑scale unauthorised use, intellectual property litigation follows – not just delisting. Customs export inspections catching trademark issues also create detention risks.
Renewal window:
·Simple products with unchanged hardware – one month in advance is sufficient.
·High‑power in‑vehicle chargers, multi‑port chargers – if Huawei requests sample retesting during renewal, the timeline extends to 4–6 weeks – start 60 days in advance. Do not apply simple‑product windows to complex products.
Products manufactured during the lapse period are uncertified. Unauthorised major changes – Huawei will revoke certification – restarting from scratch is far more expensive than renewal.
