HDMI certification is not a government access regime. It is a trademark licensing and compliance system managed by HDMI LA, the HDMI Licensing Administrator. The HDMI Forum only writes the technical specifications; it does not touch adopter contracting or certification management. Any product with an HDMI interface, or claiming compliance with the specification, has to pass compliance testing before mass production - otherwise the HDMI trademark cannot be used. It is a brand licensing programme, not a customs certificate.
So "how long" runs from the moment you sign as an adopter to the point where the ATC test is passed and, for cables, the certification label is added. What follows breaks the time into stages, and the emphasis is on the variables - do not apply a fixed number of months to every product. Devices and cables differ by several weeks, and multi-region certification stacks regional requirements on top.
First you sign the HDMI Adopter Agreement and obtain the right to use the specification. The administrative process looks simple, but the actual duration depends on the entity type and the legal pace: a simple entity can e-sign in a matter of days, while a multinational or multi-entity company goes through qualification review and legal routing and rarely finishes in days. The agreement is the precondition for everything that follows, so put it into the project calendar at the start.
Adopter status is the precondition for all later testing. Test before signing and HDMI LA will not recognise the report - the money is wasted. Only after signing can you download the current CTS and enter the ATC booking process; the order cannot be shuffled.
The adopter self-tests against the current HDMI Compliance Test Specification, covering the basic compliance requirements for audio and video, protocol and interoperability. Self-testing speed depends on internal resources and is within the manufacturer's control - a week if the resources are ready. Keep evidence item by item; simply having run it does not count, and if something fails you need to trace which item did not pass. Treat the self-test as a rehearsal for the formal submission and the pass rate climbs.
Do not skip the self-test. Many factories send straight to the ATC and only then find the basic items fail, and the back-and-forth costs more time than the self-test itself. Run the protocol layer and the basic audio-video items first and the submission pass rate improves - what you save is queueing time.
For each product category - source, sink, repeater, cable - the first article has to go to an HDMI Authorized Test Center (ATC). Whether later units of the same category can be exempted runs through the product-family mechanism: only derivative models that have completed product-family filing at the ATC and share an identical HDMI-related hardware design can be exempted from repeat testing. Changing the production line or the supplier does not necessarily trigger retesting - it depends on whether the change touches the HDMI-related circuits, RF and EMI, protocol or signal integrity.
ATC scheduling is the main variable, and in peak season it runs longer than the test itself. Sources and sinks usually take a few weeks to a month or two, and cables with EMI take longer still. Go by the ATC's current schedule and leave room. The second-half new-product season is the peak, so booking two or three months ahead is steadier. Prepare two sample sets - one to send, one to keep.
High Speed and Ultra High Speed HDMI cables have a dedicated certification programme, requiring EMI testing and a certification label to deter counterfeits. The base specification for Ultra High Speed cable is 48 Gbps, and HDMI 2.2 adds an Ultra96 cable that extends the bandwidth to 96 Gbps. EMI is stricter, there is one more test step, and cables take longer than devices.
The label is part of closing the certification loop. Packaging without the corresponding certification mark gets questioned by retail and integrators, and adding it is another round. Label templates and printing specifications follow HDMI LA's requirements - do not design your own and invite rework. Certification marks come in two styles, one for devices and one for cables; mixing them is pursued by HDMI LA, so confirm where your product lands before the tooling is cut.
Signing the Adopter Agreement means ongoing compliance. If a product revision involves an HDMI-related design change, it has to be assessed for retesting, or it counts as a breach. HDMI LA spot-checks certified cables on the market and publishes the results; a failed check means remediation and re-certification. The specification is at version 2.2, and old-version reports are not recognised for new models.
Certification labels and trademark use follow the Adopter Agreement, and printing the HDMI mark beyond the permitted scope is pursued too - do not use it loosely for shelf appeal. Devices and cables differ by several weeks in cycle, and multi-region certification stacks regional requirements, so leave enough margin in production scheduling.
The HDMI specification is at version 2.2, so confirm which CTS version the laboratory is testing against before you start - do not take an old-version report to a new model. The Ultra96 cable is new in HDMI 2.2 and should not be conflated with the older Ultra High Speed cable.
Online posts that describe the HDMI cycle as a "fixed one month" usually ignore two variables: ATC scheduling and cable EMI. Before you act, go by HDMI LA's current testing policy - when the terms line up, you stop drifting.
