Factories exporting wireless products to Japan watch the MIC Radio Act ministerial ordinances every year, and this year is no exception. The Giteki mark is Japan's technical conformity mark for radio equipment. Anything with a radio that is sold in Japan has to carry it, and it is issued by designated certification bodies, known as RCBs. The 2026 round of changes centres on four areas: RF exposure, wireless power transfer, 6 GHz Wi-Fi and the self-confirmation regime. Miss the detail before you start and rework is routine.
Giteki sits on the MIC Radio Act. Phones, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and automotive radar all fall inside it, and both the mark and the number have to be printed on the nameplate.
On naming, be careful. TELEC is one RCB issuing body, not the name of the certification itself; the formal term is Giteki. Industry people will understand if you say "TELEC certification", but a technical write-up should not treat TELEC as the certification, or readers will think switching issuing body is all it takes.
Certificates and construction design certifications carry no set expiry date. The real variable is standard iteration: when MIC amends the ordinance it provides a transition period running from a few months to two years. Products that already hold a number generally do not need retesting, and only new submissions follow the new version - do not tear the whole thing down the moment a version changes.
How exemption is decided is the first thing to get right. MIC looks at RF exposure, and distance from the human body alone does not settle it. You compare the device's transmit power, frequency and distance to the body against the MPE limits. Meeting the limits exempts the device from the SAR test, and what carries that exemption is whether the MPE assessment report holds up, not physical distance.
For an automotive T-Box, low transmit power that meets the MPE limits can exempt SAR, but an MPE assessment report still has to back it. The legislation gives no explicit T-Box exemption, and a unit mounted close to occupants still needs a full assessment. Do not assume that "far from people" means automatic exemption.
The outdoor opening is conditional. It applies only to 920 MHz space transmission systems at specified low-power radio stations, not to every 920 MHz wireless charging product. These systems were previously indoor-only, and MIC changed the rules so that qualifying ones can be used outdoors.
The hard indicators are numerous. Output power, antenna type and interference suppression are all pinned down, so work through the parameters one by one before submitting a sample rather than assuming every 920 MHz wireless power transfer product can be deployed outdoors under Giteki.
AFC is not universally mandatory. Japan's 6 GHz WLAN divides into LPI, low-power indoor, which needs no AFC, and SP high-power mode, which does. MIC's AFC arrangements are still being completed through 2026, so not every 6 GHz device is forced onto AFC.
DFS, meanwhile, is a 5 GHz matter. DFS is the radar coexistence mechanism for 5 GHz and has nothing to do with 6 GHz, which has no DFS at all. Existing 2.4 and 5 GHz models do not need 6 GHz testing forced on them; only new models carrying 6 GHz hardware top it up.
The timing is specific: the ordinance revision takes effect on 24 July 2026, bringing certain specified special radio equipment into the technical conformity self-confirmation regime.
Self-confirmation is not an exemption from testing. Companies still run the full RF tests and keep the complete set of reports; what changes is that the file is not sent to an RCB for certification but instead self-tested and notified to MIC. Nor does every product in a category automatically qualify - power and scenario limits both apply.
TPMS, RKE in the UHF band, automotive radar, in-cabin detection sensors, UWB, and WLAN at 2.4, 5.2, 5.6 and 6 GHz up to 25 mW all sit in the specified special radio equipment categories, but whether a given product is included depends on power and scenario. Do not read it as "any UWB can go the self-confirmation route".
Choosing the certification type follows production scale. Technical conformity certification suits single units or small batches, while construction design certification suits large-batch mass-production designs. It is not a simple front-fitment versus aftermarket split - front-fitment projects also use technical conformity certification, and large-volume aftermarket products can equally apply for construction design certification.
On the nameplate, print the Giteki mark together with the Giteki number; "Certification Number" is acceptable in English. Products going through self-confirmation also carry the Giteki identifier - it is not limited to the RCB-certified cohort. Circuit diagrams may be in English, but safety warnings in the manual must be in Japanese.
On retention, the MIC Radio Act requires that test records and manufacturing inspection records tied to construction design certification and self-confirmation be kept for ten years, not five. A marking error counts as no certification, and supervision can require correction, halt sales or levy a fine.
Standard iteration brings spot-check risk. Existing certificates generally do not need retesting and new applications follow the new version; MIC changes the baseline with a transition period, and while the existing certificate stays valid, spot checks follow the current version. Do not overlook that.
On bodies, different RCBs hold different authorised scopes. Confirm the body's qualification across bands before committing, because some only accept specific categories, and a cross-category move means changing body and breaking the schedule. The practical rule is to choose the body by scope rather than by reputation, and to confirm the acceptance terms with the issuing party before starting.
