CarPlay Certification Process – From MFi Registration to Test Pass – Full Path

2026-08-17

For in‑vehicle infotainment manufacturers, CarPlay certification is now a common project requirement. In 2026, Apple officially adopted the CarPlay 2.0 specification and the Facets 3 test system – old‑version execution methods are all retired – new projects must follow the latest rules. From MFi membership registration to final TID issuance – with smooth progress, at least six months are needed – with more changes, the timeline can extend to a year.

一、CarPlay – Stage‑by‑Stage Practical Points and Timelines

Stage 1: MFi membership and factory audit

The first step in CarPlay certification is joining Apple's MFi programme. Without an active membership account, you cannot access any CarPlay technical documentation.

First, obtain a D‑U‑N‑S number – then register at mfi.apple.com – upload your business licence and internal quality control documents.

Common misconception: ISO 9001 is a hard requirement. This is not accurate. Companies without a formal quality certificate can submit self‑developed standardised control documents and production process materials. Apple focuses on quality management systems, material traceability, component control, and after‑sales handling – complete documentation speeds up review – lack of a single certificate does not automatically cause rejection.

Factory audit requirements depend on business model:

·Design‑only companies without production lines – can apply for audit exemption.

·Companies with production lines – handling assembly, own‑brand, or contract manufacturing – must undergo on‑site audit.

This stage typically takes 1–3 months. With complete documents and no audit – about 1.5 months. With on‑site audit and multiple document revisions – 2–3 months is normal.

Stage 2: PPID product plan application

After membership is active, you cannot start testing immediately – you must first create a PPID (Product Plan ID) for the product.

The PPID is a complete product parameter file in Apple's system. Under the 2026 rules, the parameters you enter directly determine the Facets 3 automated test cases. If you make errors or omissions – the tests won't match the product – and the entire testing process must be redone.

Required information: product model, feature scope, compatible iPhone models/iOS versions, wired or wireless, Wi‑Fi bands, Bluetooth version, iAP2 stack, MFi chip model.

Note: CarPlay 2.0 is only for front‑load OEM projects – aftermarket head units and adapters can still apply for standard CarPlay. Wireless products are prone to errors – module parameters and chip models must match the sample – mismatches cause rejection at the test stage.

Stage 3: R&D self‑testing and Facets 3 pre‑testing

This is the longest and most remediation‑intensive stage.

Using Apple‑authorised MFi chips, complete sample prototyping, hardware debugging, iAP2 protocol adaptation, automotive EMC, and encryption debugging. Self‑testing uses the Facets 3 automated test system – mandatory from 2025 – Facets 2 is no longer supported.

Facets 3 vs. Facets 2: Facets 2 allowed flexible local test‑plan adjustments – Facets 3 requires MFi account login – test cases are automatically generated from the PPID information.

Important: internal R&D self‑test data is not uploaded to Apple servers – only formal lab test data is archived.

R&D self‑testing typically takes 1.5–2.5 months. Smaller companies without self‑test infrastructure can engage authorised labs for pre‑testing – identifying issues early – reducing formal‑test rework.

Stage 4: Apple‑authorised lab formal testing

After self‑test remediation is complete – submit formal samples to an authorised lab. Timelines vary by product type:

·Wired peripherals: 3–5 weeks.

·Wireless adapters: 6–8 weeks – extensive Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi interoperability testing.

·Head units: 8–12 weeks – additional cockpit‑integration tests.

If testing fails, samples must be modified and retested – each retest round adds 1–2 months. With Facets 3 fully deployed, multiple retests not only increase costs – they also continuously delay the project – thorough R&D self‑testing is critical.

Stage 5: Apple final review and certification

After lab reports are complete – submit to Apple for final review. Apple checks test data and production‑consistency declarations – upon approval, a TID is issued – the product is entered into the MFi certification database.

Final review takes 1–2 months. Packaging design, trademark compliance, and user manuals are also reviewed – taking 1–3 weeks. Only after all steps are complete can the product be mass‑produced and sold.

  二、Certificate Rules and Scheduling Recommendations

Under MFi rules, there is no mandatory annual full retest. PPID and TID filings remain valid long‑term – provided MFi annual fees are paid and the product has no major software/hardware changes. Apple only requests retesting when specifications are updated or during targeted audits.

·Minor firmware optimisations and UI adjustments: generally no re‑certification.

·Authentication‑chip changes, wired/wireless architecture changes: new PPID required.

Membership lapse: all certifications under the account become invalid.

Project timeline reference:

·Front‑load head units (mature solutions): 4–8 months.

·New architecture: up to 1 year.

·Aftermarket wired products: 5–7 months.

·Wireless solutions: 7–10 months.

At project kick‑off, confirm front‑load vs. aftermarket and wired vs. wireless – and allocate sufficient Facets 3 self‑test time.

三、CarPlay 2.0 New Requirements and MFi Chip Controls

CarPlay 2.0 is only for front‑load OEM cockpit projects – adding multi‑screen collaboration and cross‑screen navigation information. The DSM driver‑monitoring interface is an optional extension for front‑load Ultra solutions – standard CarPlay and aftermarket products do not require it. Wireless solutions add Wi‑Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4 compatibility tests – factor these in at the design stage.

All CarPlay‑certified products must use Apple‑authorised MFi chips – chip models in the PPID must match the samples. Purchase directly from chip manufacturers or authorised distributors – do not use unauthorised channels – if discovered, MFi membership will be revoked.
