Does USB-IF Certification Expire? How TID Validity Really Works

1.A TID Has No Fixed Expiry Date

The USB-IF Test ID is not a qualification with a fixed term written into it. A TID is tied to the specific hardware and firmware revision that was tested, and as long as the USB specification it belongs to has not been withdrawn, the number stays in the database where a buyer can look it up at any time.

Export customers tend to open with the question of how many years there are until renewal, which points at the wrong thing. What actually decides how long the qualification lasts are two factors: keeping the annual membership fee running, and keeping the design away from any change that demands retesting.

There is a further layer worth separating. A valid TID does not automatically mean the product can carry the Certified USB logo. Rights to the mark come from a valid membership or from a separately signed trademark licence agreement, which is a different track from the TID itself. Writing the renewal date into the calendar is cheaper than discovering later that the logo cannot be used.

2.Specification Updates Do Not Force Automatic Retesting

USB-IF does require retesting as specifications evolve, but the full statement matters: a new specification version does not force existing listed TIDs to be retested. Kept TIDs remain valid, and only a formal withdrawal of the older version, or a new product launch, brings the current CTS into play.

On connectors and cables, Type-C has reached revision 2.4, and a 2.5 release, Release 202603, arrived in 2026. New projects have to draw up their test plan against the current revision; building one on documents left over from an earlier project means rework later, usually at the worst point in the schedule.

3.PD 3.2, USB4 2.0 and the Bandwidth Wording

Fast charging has reached PD 3.2 and high-speed interfaces have reached USB4 2.0. Bandwidth is where descriptions usually go wrong: USB4 2.0 supports a symmetric ceiling of 80 Gbps, with an optional asymmetric reconfiguration delivering 120 Gbps in one direction and 40 Gbps in the other, which is not the same thing as a 120 Gbps port.

On the charging side, 240 W came in with PD 3.1 EPR and PD 3.2 carries it forward, adding SPR AVS with adjustable voltage in 100 mV steps. Products at the higher power tiers need the EPR cases as well, and where a laboratory has no coverage for them, the bottleneck lands at the listing stage rather than in the test chamber.

4.Design Changes, and the QbS Middle Route

Touching pin definitions, the power path or the protocol stack triggers re-evaluation. Changing silkscreen or packaging without touching the circuit normally does not.

There is a middle route that often gets overlooked: the USB-IF QbS similarity assessment. A casing change that affects thermal behaviour and shifts component temperatures, or a same-spec main controller with unchanged routing, can be filed through QbS first, and USB-IF decides whether to approve directly or to require a specified subset of tests - retesting is not the default. Where QbS is approved, a new TID is issued, and processing usually takes ten to fourteen working days. Only USB-IF can grant it, so the assessment is not something a laboratory can shortcut on the manufacturer's behalf.

5.Dues Keep the Listing and the Logo Alive

Once the annual fee lapses, new listings and the right to use the trademark are suspended together, and existing listed products cannot carry the Certified USB logo either - the authorisation comes from the membership itself rather than from the number. The TID remains in the database, and once the dues are settled the rights come back without any retesting.

Companies that stay outside membership have to sign a trademark licence agreement separately; it runs for two years, and when it expires the logo is again out of reach. That arrangement is worth checking before a product line is planned around it, because the two-year cycle does not always line up with a product roadmap.

6.The 240 W and AVS Boundary

Output above 27 W must support SPR AVS under PD 3.2, but the requirement falls on the source side only. A sink has no such obligation, so a sink should not be developed against source specifications. Whether FRS moves from optional to mandatory is not settled in publicly available material, so the current PD 3.2 CTS governs. Multi-port devices have to declare and verify shared power allocation; leaving that out adds work at the listing stage.

7.EU Notebooks, Spot Checks and Withdrawal

From 28 April 2026, notebooks placed on the EU market have to meet IEC 62680. This route is widely misunderstood as having no number attached - USB-IF opened a dedicated conformity programme for it, and a TID is assigned there too, but that TID carries no right to the Certified USB mark. It satisfies regulation only. A product wanting the logo still has to complete full certification and obtain a regular TID.

A TID is not permanent protection either. USB-IF spot-checks listed products on the market, and where the shipped hardware differs materially from the tested sample, the TID can be withdrawn outright, even without a deliberate hardware change. Keeping production aligned with the submitted sample is the manufacturer's responsibility, and it is the one item on this list that no amount of paperwork can fix after the fact.
