What Does BQB Certification Cost? Where the Money Actually Goes

1.The Bill Has Three Parts

Manufacturers usually come to BQB expecting a single number. In practice the cost splits into three blocks: the Bluetooth SIG membership fee that buys entry, the qualification and listing fees that follow the design, and the third-party laboratory testing that tends to dominate the total.

2.Membership Dues Are the Entry Ticket

Pick the tier by output, not by hope. The Adopter tier carries no annual fee and suits factories that only list products and do not develop low-level designs. From March 2026 a Contributing Adopter tier was added, split by scale, with a discount on the first qualification fee. The Associate tier brings voting rights, broader brand permissions and larger discounts, at a higher entry bar. Sorting the tier comes down to a simple question: how many products do you put out in a year?

The dues repeat every year, and year-end is where it goes wrong. Once the membership lapses, completed designs are not voided and products already on the market keep selling. What stops is new listing during the gap, along with any use of the Bluetooth trademark. The licence comes back when the renewal payment lands. Late payment discovered the following year, with packaging already printed, is a scenario that shows up often.

3.Qualification and Listing Fees Follow the Design

Fees track the design, not the model count. However many models sit under one design, they are listed inside the same declaration, and the SIG charges no further official fee for them. Open a separate declaration and a Declaration ID has to be purchased on its own. The DN is a design number and the Declaration ID is a declaration number - mix the two up in customer-facing documents and the buyer cannot reconcile them.

DN replaced QDID, so keep the wording straight. Since QPRD v3 became mandatory on 1 July 2024, newly submitted qualification designs are assigned a DN. Legacy designs keep their QDID and can still be referenced by new projects. Buyers check the number in the SIG database, so an incorrect number costs a round of explanation.

4.Third-Party Testing Is the Largest Line

Full qualification and derivative listing differ in scope, not in goodwill. Full qualification testing runs the complete case list, and quotes for Classic and LE Audio sit far apart depending on frequency bands, profile combinations and sample count. Reusing a certified DN for a derivative build only adds the differences found in the finished product, which can bring the cost down to a fraction of full testing. One item is easy to overlook: where a single DN is referenced directly and neither the RF nor the protocol stack has changed, testing can be waived and a declaration alone will do.

Automotive is priced as its own category. Head units commonly operate between minus forty and eighty-five degrees Celsius, so the laboratory runs a wide-temperature chamber across the full range, and quotes come in above consumer work. Write the temperature range into the specification early rather than adding it at sample submission.

5.Two Routes That Push the Budget Down

Reuse a certified module. Where a qualified module is already in hand, reference it and add only the antenna and interoperability differences to the finished product, which cuts both the number of rounds and the samples required. The catch is that the core hardware and software must stay unchanged and the referenced module must still be in valid listing status. Miss one condition and the derivative channel is refused, putting the product back through full testing and costing both money and schedule.

Leave enough self-test evidence to avoid rework. Before official submission, run the cases in your own environment and keep complete logs. Where RF, protocol and audio evidence, including call and media audio paths, is all in place, a first-pass result is far more likely. Gaps mean supplementary testing rounds, and the schedule cost of those usually outweighs the laboratory fee.

6.Three Costs That Get Left Out

A Company ID is not compulsory for everyone. A Company Identifier is only needed where manufacturer data in the broadcast packet carries your own identifier, or where the product connects to services such as Fast Pair or CarPlay. It is charged on the Adopter and Contributing Adopter tiers and waived on Associate. Do not confuse it with the 16-bit UUID, which is a separate application used for custom services; the two are unrelated.

A lapsed membership suspends your standing. New listings cannot be filed during the gap, the trademark is off limits, and a buyer audit or spot check will show the account as abnormal, holding orders up regardless. Put the renewal date in the calendar and the problem does not arise.

Changing an antenna does not automatically mean re-certification. Antenna changes split into two cases. Switching to a different antenna type - a board-mounted part replaced by ceramic or FPC, for example - counts as a major RF change even if the matching circuit is untouched, and calls for re-assessment or retesting. Trimming passive components in the matching network while keeping the same antenna type, gain and trace layout can go through a variation assessment and may not even touch the design number. Treating every antenna change as a rebuild wastes money.
