CarPlay certification is the in-vehicle special authorisation inside Apple's MFi programme, not a standalone system. A company first passes MFi membership review and only then can apply, working with Apple's designated authentication chip and the iAP2 protocol. Wireless connectivity, the shift to USB-C and rising security compliance thresholds have piled up together, so the bar sits higher than in earlier years. Starting six months ahead is what keeps a new-car launch on time.
CarPlay's official identity is a special authorisation for in-vehicle entertainment devices under MFi. Passing review allows lawful use of the "Made for iPhone" mark and gives access to the CarPlay SDK and technical support.
A few movements took shape through 2025. Wireless has become the default on new cars. USB-C replaced Lightning, so new wired projects accept only USB-C; existing Lightning solutions stay valid, and Apple has simply stopped opening new Lightning projects. Cybersecurity is something car makers care about, but that is a customer requirement, not an item Apple's CarPlay certification tests.
Commercial vehicles can still be wired-first, while the consumer end has largely gone wireless, so settle the connectivity method at project launch.
The qualification threshold calls for an enterprise Apple developer account plus the business licence, entity information and a manufacturing capability statement. Apple does not mandate ISO 9001 or automotive track record; those are procurement thresholds set by vehicle clients, not MFi membership requirements.
Review runs one to two months. The annual fee is around US299 at the basic tier and around US999 at the advanced tier, against Apple's current published pricing. The annual fee is a membership cost and a different thing from the validity of a product qualification.
Software and hardware development must be compatible with iAP2 and support navigation, calls and media. In the wireless path, Bluetooth handles pairing only and Wi-Fi carries audio and video. The versions are not locked: Bluetooth 4.2 paired with Wi-Fi 5 works perfectly well, depending on the product design - it does not have to be Bluetooth 5.2 with Wi-Fi 6. The wired path runs over USB-C.
Pre-testing saves real money. A third party runs the CarPlay protocol, audio and video, and Siri wake-up as a triage first, fixing about eighty percent of the issues in advance. EMC and cybersecurity belong to the national wireless access regimes - CE RED, FCC, SRRC - and are not on Apple's test list.
Apple-authorised laboratories run the CarPlay protocol, audio and video including ITU-T voice, basic Siri wake-up and commands, and USB and wireless interconnection compatibility. Apple works mainly from benches and simulators and does not require a full 5,000 km of real-vehicle running; real-vehicle validation is the car maker's own product verification, not a mandatory Apple step.
Formal testing runs three to four months including remediation. A mismatch between sample firmware and documents is bounced, and rescheduling starts from a new submission.
Once everything passes, the company receives MFi product qualification and CarPlay authorisation qualification, called a licence in the trade and, strictly speaking, not a traditional certificate. The product can then use the "Works with Apple CarPlay" mark.
The qualification stays valid. With hardware and firmware unchanged, it remains in force - there is no one-year expiry and reissue. Apple runs compatibility verification alongside iOS versions, which is not an annual spot check and carries no mandatory annual log submission. Only a design change or a protocol upgrade can trigger re-review.
On samples and chokepoints, you hand over near-production samples, the wiring harness, the bench and the complete software version; a mismatch is bounced. The chokepoints cluster around Siri wake-up rate, wireless concurrency stability and channel interference. Catching them in pre-testing beats two months of remediation in the formal stage. Wireless CarPlay stacks Bluetooth BQB and Wi-Fi Alliance certification on top, so budget all three. BQB and the Wi-Fi Alliance are RF compliance and national market certifications rather than Apple internal tests, so do not count only the Apple leg. Documents should include the circuit diagram, the BQB report, the Wi-Fi Alliance report and an English manual. Siri verifies only basic wake-up and does not mandate dialect coverage, and DSM is not a CarPlay mandatory item either.
Keep the chain in perspective. MFi membership plus CarPlay certification testing alone, excluding building the software and hardware from scratch, is far shorter than the figures below. Wired at ten to twelve months overall, and wireless at one and a half to two years, describes the whole chain including early hardware development, firmware and certification - not the certification segment on its own.
Expedited handling can compress the schedule but the fee rises, and the thirty to fifty percent figure is a third-party laboratory quote rather than an Apple official rule. Treat it as a reference, not a fixed conclusion.

One reminder: wireless CarPlay also has to clear Bluetooth BQB and Wi-Fi Alliance certification, and both are RF compliance for national markets, so the budget should not miss them. Before you start, go by Apple's current MFi specification.
