2026 eCall Emergency Call System Certification

2026-03-26

In 2026, eCall certification is mandatory for all new vehicles and automotive components sold in the EU. It ensures that in the event of a severe crash, the emergency system automatically activates, transmits critical data (location, VIN, time of impact) to rescue services via the EU emergency number 112, and establishes a voice call.

I. What Is eCall Certification?

eCall certification validates the reliability of the in-vehicle emergency call system under extreme conditions — including power loss, weak signal, tunnels, and remote areas. The system must trigger automatically via crash detection or manually via a physical button, then send MSD (Minimum Set of Data) and support voice communication.

II. 2026 Core Regulation: Full Transition to NG eCall

2026 marks the end of legacy 2G/3G eCall. All new certifications require NG eCall over 4G/5G + IMS.

Key EU regulations:

·(EU) 2024/1180

·(EU) 2025/1871 (amendment)

Key deadlines:

·Jan 1, 2026: No new approvals for legacy eCall

·Jan 1, 2027: All new vehicles must comply with NG eCall

Test standards:EN 16072:2025, EN 17184:2024, EN 17240:2024, UN R144

III. 2026 NG eCall Key Test Focus

1.Trigger Reliability: Automatic crash detection & manual button response

2.MSD v3 Data Transmission over IMS

3.High-precision positioning: ≤3 meters accuracy

4.Backup battery endurance (major failure point in 2026)

5.Network resilience: Weak signal, roaming, fallback to 2G/3G

6.Environmental & EMC testing: Temperature, vibration, shock

7.Real-vehicle crash & road testing

  IV. Products Requiring eCall Certification

·EU market: M1 passenger cars, N1 light commercial vehicles

·Components: T-Box, telematics control units, head units, navigation modules, communication modules

Similar systems exist in other markets: Russia’s ERA-GLONASS, UAE/Saudi emergency call schemes — not interchangeable with EU eCall.
