To export household appliances, lighting, displays, and power adapters to the EU, CE safety and EMC certificates alone are not enough – many categories also require ErP ecodesign compliance. ErP – Energy‑related Products Directive – Regulation (EC) 2009/125 – is a CE‑associated harmonised directive. Many write it as "ERP" – the correct notation is ErP. Simple capitalisation/spelling errors generally won't cause rejection – but non‑compliant efficiency parameters, label formats, or standard versions will. This article covers ErP compliance details, energy‑labelling rules, and EPREL database registration.


一、Which Products Does ErP Cover?

Whether a product is exempt depends on more than just batteries. Products that rely solely on internal batteries with no external mains connection are generally exempt. If the device can be powered from the mains – even with a battery – it's generally in scope.

1. Covered categories are broad:

·Refrigeration: fridges, freezers, wine coolers, commercial units.

·Washing: washing machines, dishwashers, dryers.

·Air conditioning/ventilation: air conditioners, fans, ventilation systems.

·Audio‑video/displays: TVs, commercial displays.

·Cooking: ovens, microwaves, induction cooktops.

·Lighting: LED light sources, luminaires, dimmable lighting.

From 2025, new categories include beverage makers, printers, gaming handhelds, and electric height‑adjustable desks.

Key distinction: meeting ErP energy‑consumption limits does not automatically mean you must print the A‑G energy label or register in EPREL. Energy labelling + EPREL registration is a separate regulatory requirement – applying only to specified categories: fridges, luminaires, TVs, etc. External power adapters, for example – most only need to meet ErP limits – they do not need an energy label or EPREL entry.


  二、Energy Label – A+++ Replaced by A–G

From 2021, the EU phased out the old A+++ to D scale – replacing it with the A–G seven‑level label. The old scale had become meaningless – too many products achieved A+++ – consumers couldn't distinguish actual differences.

The new scale is much stricter – many products that were A+++ under the old scale now test at C or D. Products rated G are banned from the EU market.

Compliant energy labels have six mandatory elements:

·EU supplier name or registered trademark.

·Complete product model.

·Corresponding energy‑efficiency letter.

·Standard‑condition energy consumption data.

·EPREL QR code.

·Applicable EU energy regulation number.

Standard label size: 36mm × 72mm. For small devices or simple packaging, a reduced label is allowed – minimum 20mm × 54mm. Labels are primarily on the outer packaging – not always on the product body.


  三、EPREL Database Registration – Hard Requirement (for labelled categories)

Products that require the energy label must be registered in the EU EPREL system – generating a unique product code and QR code. Consumers can scan the QR code to view energy data and compliance documents. Products without EPREL registration are deemed non‑compliant.

Non‑EU companies cannot register directly – they must appoint an EU Authorised Representative to submit documents and maintain records.

Registration process:

1.Create an EU LOGIN corporate account.

2.Link to the EU‑REP entity.

3.Upload product parameters, energy test reports, and DoC per model.

4.After review, the system generates an official energy label with QR code.

EU‑REP engagement, document preparation, and account linking typically take 2–4 weeks. Start early – don't wait until just before shipment.


  四、Test Items – Detailed

1. Household appliances

·Rated‑condition power consumption, standby power, off‑mode power, EEI (Energy Efficiency Index), abnormal‑condition consumption.

·Under (EU) 2023/826, from 2025: standby ≤0.5W – with display: ≤0.8W – off‑mode ≤0.5W.

·From May 2027: off‑mode tightened to 0.3W.

·Devices must enter low‑power mode within 20 minutes of inactivity.

·HiNA (High Network Availability) devices: connected standby ≤8W – from 2027: ≤7W.

·General connected devices: connected standby ≤2W.

2. Lighting

·Luminous efficacy (lm/W), CRI, power factor, flicker (SVM and Pst LM).

·Both flicker parameters are required – many old reports only include SVM – missing Pst LM results in rejection – a common blocker for lighting exports.

3. Displays

·On‑mode power, low‑power standby, HDR peak brightness, dynamic energy parameters.

·EEI is calculated per IEC 62087-3 – using average power during dynamic video playback.

Choose labs with CNAS and ILAC‑MRA accreditation. Also check the EU harmonised standard version – even with lab accreditation, an outdated standard version will be questioned by EU market surveillance.


  五、Common Violations

Using old A+++ labels – the most common issue. Old labels lack the QR code – the classification system is obsolete – there is no transition period – customs and e‑commerce platforms will detain goods.

EPREL vs. physical product mismatches – frequent: filing for 220V but shipping 110V – or using sample‑test data but changing internal components in mass production. Voltage changes and hardware changes directly affect energy metrics – non‑matching data = non‑compliant.

Product iterations without updating EPREL – replacing compressors, LED chips, mainboards, or firmware can change energy consumption. Such changes require re‑testing and EPREL updates.

Confusing ErP and EPR – ErP is the CE‑associated ecodesign regulation for energy consumption. EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) covers packaging, batteries, and waste‑electronics recycling. Two separate systems – different regulators – both required.


  六、Test Timeline and Cost Reference

ErP test timelines – assuming first‑pass and complete documents:

·Household appliances: 4–6 weeks.

·Lighting: 3–5 weeks.

·Displays: 4–6 weeks.

Cost ranges:

·Simple products (adapters, LED bulbs): RMB 6,000–12,000.

·Household appliances (washing machines, dishwashers): RMB 15,000–30,000.

·Complex (commercial refrigeration, large displays): RMB 30,000+.

·Add EU‑REP service fees and EPREL filing: RMB 5,000–10,000 additional.

Retest costs: 50–70% of initial test fees. Run internal pre‑testing before formal submission – optimise efficiency parameters to pass range – improving first‑pass probability.


  七、Customs and Platform Enforcement – Continuing to Tighten

From the second half of 2025, EU customs have increased energy‑label checks – focusing on the built‑in QR code. If the code doesn't match EPREL records, model information is inconsistent, or energy grades conflict – goods are detained.

Amazon, Temu, and other platforms are generally stricter than customs – they require uploaded energy labels, EPREL records, and full test reports. Platform systems automatically cross‑check databases – mismatched information leads to delisting.


  八、Future Regulatory Trends

2027 off‑mode 0.3W is already confirmed. Product lifecycle carbon‑footprint labelling is still in EU legislative proposal – not yet mandatory. For new product development, track progress – don't invest in testing immediately.

Energy testing is not one‑and‑done: changing power supplies, hardware, or main control firmware can affect power consumption and efficiency. During mass production, retain samples for periodic verification – identifying batch deviations early – avoiding large‑scale compliance disputes after goods arrive in Europe.
