I have seen HiCar certification completed in 2.5 months – and I have also seen projects drag on for 10 months. The difference is not lab efficiency – it is product type. Do not ask “how long” before knowing whether you are aftermarket wireless, aftermarket wired, front‑load, equivalence‑test, or renewal. These five paths have completely different durations. Many projects set deadlines at the kick‑off stage without this clarity – and run out of time halfway through.
The full process has eight steps: Developer Registration → SDK Integration → Vehicle Model Creation → Self‑Testing → Lab Booking → Lab Acceptance Testing → Release → Licence Signing. Each step can block you.
·Step 1 – Developer Registration: enterprise verification on DevicePartner platform, sign MOU and security‑compliance agreements. Huawei will reject if even one seal is missing.
Clarification: business‑licence scope is not mandatory – any legally operating company can register. There is no need to add “HiCar” or “automotive” to your business scope – the rumour that you must is false.
·Steps 2–3 – SDK Integration + Model Creation: SDK integration looks simple but has many traps. V6.0.0 requires a minimum of Android 14 – not Android 16. The 12 deprecated‑API replacements and 23 multi‑channel audio APIs apply only to high‑end full‑screen desktop/multi‑channel audio products – basic projection devices do not need them. Model creation is relatively quick – fill in the product model and hardware parameters accurately; errors will be returned by the lab.
·Step 4 – Self‑Testing: the heaviest phase. All self‑test cases must pass 100% – one failure means you cannot even book the lab. One month is fast; two to three months is common.
·Step 5 – Lab Booking: peak season – 2–3 weeks waiting.
·Step 6 – Lab Acceptance Testing: covered in detail below.
·Steps 7–8 – Release + Licence Signing: not complex – after final document submission, Huawei confirms and you get the certificate. But delays in earlier steps push everything back – time management must focus on the first four steps.
2. HiCar V6.0.0 – Actual Impact
V6.0.0 became mandatory on 31 December 2025 – not 31 March 2026. We are now in the enforcement period – there is no transition window.
It adds 84 new test cases – covering file transfer, desktop projection, UI, audio, and wireless connection modules. However, 84 is the maximum for full‑spec high‑end suites – basic‑version vehicles do not need all of them; the actual rework for basic projection is far less. File‑transfer and audio modules have the most new cases – both are traditionally problematic.
Not all new items are mandatory:
·Audio splitting, in‑vehicle OTA, and concurrent audio recording – only mandatory for devices with the corresponding hardware capability – no hardware = exemption.
·Audio splitting is not globally mandatory – basic head units can be feature‑trimmed to exempt it – no hardware rework required.
The biggest mistake is assuming all these must be implemented – wasting budget on unnecessary changes.
Desktop projection supports 720P and 1080P – there is no mandatory 1080P minimum. Only high‑end mirroring modes have higher resolution requirements – basic desktop features are not forced to 1080P. Do not replace screens or drop features based on false hardware‑threshold rumours.
Test phones: use Huawei Mate or P series released in the last 3 years, running HarmonyOS 6.0+ – not limited to the previous 1‑2 years. Get the hardware ready first – then talk about timeline.
3. Timelines by Product Type
·Aftermarket wireless – first certification: normally 3–4 months; fastest 2.5 months – only if hardware is stable, software mature, team experienced, and lab highly cooperative – missing one = 4+ months.
·Aftermarket wired: fewer wireless‑connection and projection tests – 2–3 months is normal.
·Front‑load (OEM): tied to vehicle development cycles, frequent hardware changes – 6 months if smooth; 12 months not unusual – plan with ample buffer.
·Equivalence (software‑only changes, hardware unchanged): aftermarket – 2–4 weeks; front‑load – 4–6 weeks.
Important distinction: the initial HiCar whole‑product certificate is long‑term valid – no renewal needed if hardware is unchanged (same rule as HiPlay). Only software‑only equivalence filings and temporary‑adaptation filings have a 1‑year validity – do not confuse them with full‑certificate renewal.
4. Controlling Lab‑Stage Time
·Front‑load initial testing: typically 4–8 weeks; aftermarket: 3–4 weeks; each remediation round adds 1–2 weeks.
Solid self‑testing = smooth lab testing – skimping on self‑testing doubles the lab remediation time.
Lab testing is not the end – Huawei’s final review follows. With complete documents: 10–15 working days; with missing items, it stretches to 3 weeks.
No official expedite channel for HiCar – “expediting” only means lab internal scheduling adjustments – it cannot shorten Huawei’s final review.
Before kick‑off, confirm your hardware supports basic projection functions – avoid major later rework. Lab schedules and efficiency vary – get quotes from several labs before committing.
