USB-IF Certification: Required Documents & Validity Period

2026-04-27

Many engineers start to prepare application materials only after product design is finalized. This is a typical delayed operation. Core documents such as VIF files and cable power marking should be considered in the design stage. Missing pre-set documents will cause certification delays or even hardware modification.

This article clearly introduces the full material checklist and validity rules of USB-IF certification, with classified explanations for different product types and practical industry data support.

1. USB-IF Certification Application Documents (Classified by Product)

USB-IF has a clear classified management logic for application materials. Connectors, cables and PD devices have differentiated document requirements, and universal templates cannot be applied to all products.

Basic Company-Level Pre-Documents

Two mandatory company documents for all product categories:

·VID (Vendor Identification Code): The unique corporate identification issued by USB-IF, a prerequisite for CMS system product registration. Formal members obtain VID through membership qualifications, while non-members need independent application. Complete VID preparation in advance to avoid certification delays.

·Trademark License Agreement: The license is not required for testing, TID registration and integrator list filing. It is only mandatory for mass production products printed with official USB logos and certified propaganda markings. Reversing the processing order of license and certification will unnecessarily extend the preparation cycle.

PD Devices (Chargers, Adapters, Hubs)

PD products involve the most complicated document requirements with high omission risks:

·VIF File: A core mandatory document recording product functional configurations, including supported PD protocols, power supply parameters and fast charging specifications. The file must be generated via the latest official USB-IF VIF generator; outdated versions will be rejected by laboratories.

·Technical Documents: Product specifications, circuit diagrams, PCB layout drawings (focusing on PD controller modules) and complete BOM lists with clear marking of connector and chip models.

·Test Samples: 2 sets of finished products are generally required for PD equipment certification.

·Official Application Form: Fill in the latest version of the USB-IF compliance test application form provided by the laboratory.

USB Cable Products

Cable certification documents are relatively simple with several key details:

·Cables with E-Marker chips: Mandatory to provide VIF files for PD protocol and chip function verification. Ordinary non-E-Marker cables are exempted from this requirement.

·Power rating marking: USB-IF recommends marking 60W/240W power specifications on cable bodies. Clear marking in product manuals and specifications is acceptable for testing applications. Confirm the marking scheme in the design stage for consumer-grade fast charging cables to avoid post-certification modifications.

Connector Products

Connector certification has obvious differences from other categories, focusing on product drawings and customized fixtures:

·Product dimension drawings are mandatory for laboratory fixture evaluation. Standard universal connectors adopt existing laboratory fixtures, while special non-standard structures require customized tooling, leading to extra time costs.

·Two-stage testing: Pre-test for dimensional verification and formal testing for official certification. Sample preparation for two stages can be carried out in parallel to optimize the cycle.

  2. USB-IF Certification Validity: VID, TID & Logo License Separated

The validity of USB-IF compliance qualifications cannot be summarized by a single number. Three core elements have independent validity rules:

·VID (Vendor ID): Permanent and effective. Once assigned to an enterprise, the VID will not be recovered even if USB-IF membership expires. Note that permanent VID validity is independent of trademark license authorization.

·TID (Test ID): Bound to the frozen product design version. The TID has no fixed expiration date, but it is only valid for the tested design. Any performance-related product modification will invalidate the original TID and require re-testing.

·Trademark Logo License: The only item with a clear time limit. Annual membership of USB-IF costs 5,000 USD with continuous logo authorization; non-enterprise members need a one-time 3,500 USD license valid for 2 years with mandatory renewal after expiration. Expired license will disable official USB logo usage and trigger trademark compliance risks.

  3. Certification Change Rules After Product Modification

USB-IF adopts a "frozen design" core rule: certification is only valid for the tested version. Any modifications affecting USB signal quality, PD protocol negotiation and physical connection structure will require re-certification.

Common changes triggering re-testing: PD controller replacement, core firmware upgrades affecting fast charging logic, and connector model replacement.

Equivalent replacement of connectors with the same specifications and electrical performance can apply for component difference assessment and simplified exemption procedures to reduce retest costs. The re-test fee varies according to modification ranges; minor adjustments can enjoy discounted fees, while core hardware changes are charged at the full initial test price.

It is recommended to lock the official firmware version before mass production. Post-certification firmware upgrades involving PD functions will lead to high re-compliance costs.

  4. USB-IF Compliance Supervision Rules

The USB-IF Compliance Review Board (CRB) has the right to conduct random audits on all certified products. Substantial differences between mass-produced products and test samples will result in TID revocation and enterprise blacklisting.

CRB is only responsible for certification qualification management. Continuous unauthorized use of USB official logos after certification cancellation will involve trademark infringement and legal liabilities.
