一、HDMI certification overview: what it tests

The core basis for HDMI certification is the Compliance Test Specification (CTS), set by the HDMI Forum and executed by the licensing administrator; authorized test centers verify item by item against it. To use the HDMI trademark and spec, a company first becomes a license adopter and tests at an authorized test center.

1. CTS splits into four layers

CTS breaks into four tiers: physical, protocol, encryption (HDCP), and cross-device interoperability. The physical layer manages signal-link quality, the protocol layer manages handshake communication, the encryption layer manages HDCP keying, and interoperability pairs your device with certified mainstream TVs and monitors. Fail the physical layer and the three above do not even run.

2. Why it is not one document

CTS is not a single book but multiple standard documents split by tier and product category. Different bandwidths have different eye-diagram templates, and different device roles test different scopes — test engineers work through CTS document by document.

  二、What the physical layer tests

The physical layer verifies signal quality across the whole link from source chip through cable to receiver: mainly eye-diagram opening, jitter, rise/fall slew, differential impedance, and insertion/return loss.

1. Eye-diagram templates by bandwidth

Different bandwidths map to different eye-diagram templates: 2.1 has a dedicated template at 48 Gbps, 2.2 has a new template at 96 Gbps. Physical-layer failure directly blocks the upper protocol and encryption tests — if the signal is unstable, the upper layers cannot even run, so this layer is the foundation.

  三、Protocol and encryption layers

The protocol layer manages whether the HDMI interface handshake works: EDID read/store, video timing compliance, SCDC communication, CEC command response, ARC or eARC handshake. The physical layer keeps the signal transmittable; the protocol layer keeps both sides understandable.

1. The encryption layer is HDCP

The encryption layer tests HDCP compliance: key burning, source-receiver handshake, encrypted-stream decryption, revocation-list update. This layer is technically independent of the physical and protocol layers; the test flow runs serially with the protocol layer, but that is just lab execution habit — the spec does not force a fixed order, not a hard clause.

2. Interoperability is a hard requirement

Interoperability is written inside CTS chapters — not without written basis, just no separate "interop CTS" document; and it is mandatory at authorized test centers: take a set-top box or game console to connect to mainstream TVs, monitors, projectors and see if it stably outputs picture and sound without flicker or drop. This step specifically kills post-sale compatibility complaints.

  四、Test scope by device role

Sources like set-top boxes and game consoles test transmit performance, EDID parsing, encryption, video-timing output — generally not running the full receiver test, though they may do minor receiver-auxiliary tests like EDID reading. Receivers like TVs and monitors test receive sensitivity, full storage, decryption, timing compatibility, and may do minor transmit-class signal tests but not the full source transmit suite.

1. Repeaters and cables are special

AV receivers are mostly receiver sinks; only a clearly Repeater role needs bidirectional physical-layer and key relay — do not lump all AV receivers as repeaters. Cables test only physical-layer signal integrity, zero protocol, zero encryption; cables of the same series, same conductor, same process, within a defined length range can be covered by one certificate — not a separate certificate per length.

  五、HDMI 2.1 vs 2.2

2.1 supports a 48 Gbps fixed-rate link, eARC, VRR, ALLM, QFT, DSC. 2.2 raises bandwidth to 96 Gbps and adds modules like dynamic HDR sync and the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP).

1. Transition policy

48 Gbps devices without 2.2-specific features can still use the 2.1 CTS — defer to the HDMI Forum's official announcements, do not hard-code a fixed cutoff year. Only native 96 Gbps hardware with latency-indication function must forcibly run the full 2.2 test set; do not blindly chase the new standard and waste money.

  六、Common fail items

In the protocol layer, mismatched SCDC pull-up resistors and incomplete EDID timing are frequent failures. Physical-layer eye-diagram non-compliance and encryption-layer key-burn or handshake anomalies are also common. Check these at the design stage — easier than fixing after submission.
