CE is not one certificate but an umbrella term for a compliance status. The cycle for an ordinary self-declaration product and for a wireless product needing a notified body can differ by a factor of two. Asking "how long is CE" first requires answering which path.
Below we break it by stage, all under the premise of first-pass success. The real variable is not the testing itself but the remediation rounds, covered separately later.
The first one to two weeks of a project produce no reports but decide the workload later. Determine which directives apply: low-voltage equipment looks at the Low Voltage Directive, wireless transmitters look at the Radio Equipment Directive, ordinary consumer electronics usually also need EMC and hazardous-substance restrictions. One note: for RED wireless products, EMC is already wrapped inside Article 3.1(b), so you do not run a separate EMC directive — do not double-schedule.
Document preparation usually takes two to four weeks. The foundation of the technical file is laid here: circuit diagrams, block diagrams, key-component lists and their compliance proofs, manual, label draft. The component list causes the most delay — supplier certificates must be collected one by one.
Time saved here is paid back later. Sending samples with incomplete documents, then being asked for more mid-test, means re-queuing at the lab and being slower overall.
Testing itself is usually two to four weeks. EMC looks at emission and immunity; safety looks at the relevant product-category standard; wireless functions also run RF. The more complex the product and the more wireless paths, the longer.
Devices with 5G and Dynamic Frequency Selection add markedly more RF test items. Receiver performance is mandatory under the Radio Equipment Directive, not optional — do not think you only test the transmit side.
Cybersecurity is counted separately. From August 2025, network-capable radio equipment must meet cybersecurity requirements; the corresponding harmonised-standard assessment usually adds two to four weeks, and longer if a notified body must be involved.
Few projects pass first time. Radiated emission over the limit, ESD failure, temperature-rise wiring — all common. One remediation plus retest is a week fast, three to four weeks slow; board changes are counted by the month.
Remediation rounds are the hardest to predict in the cycle. Budget at least one round as buffer; pressing the mass-production node on a first-pass assumption will mostly go wrong.
After reports come out, compile the technical file and declaration of conformity — routinely one to two weeks. The RoHS declaration is a statutory part of the technical file and cannot be omitted; it must cover homogeneous materials.
Self-declaration products are essentially done at this step. Those needing a notified-body certificate add four to eight weeks for type examination and issuance, depending on body schedule and document completeness.
Simple self-declaration, first-pass: six to ten weeks. Wireless but still self-declaration: eight to twelve weeks. Notified-body-involved: add four to eight weeks on top.
These are experience ranges, not promises. The biggest influences are product complexity, remediation rounds and body schedule — two of the three are not in your own hands.
EU projects benefit from a pre-test before sample submission, screening high-frequency failures like radiated emission first, avoiding board rework after the formal test stalls.

Harmonised-standard version changes have a transition period during which both old and new versions are usable; do not rush to retest the moment a new version is published. Which version your declaration cites follows the current official list, not an automatic chase of the newest.
