Many HDMI certification projects fail not because of test failures, but due to documentation issues. HDMI LA's review is strict – missing items or parameter inconsistencies mean the entire application is returned to the queue, causing significant delays.
I worked on an automotive rear-seat display project – the ATC tests passed first time, costing over RMB 100,000 in testing. Then product listing was held up for nearly a month due to documentation issues. The product itself had no performance defects – the lost time was purely administrative.
HDMI certification has two routes – often misunderstood:
·Full new product certification – the most common for end-product manufacturers – requires full documentation, complete ATC testing, signed compliance agreements, and final online product listing.
·Pre-certified module solution – the module vendor already holds HDMI ATC pre-certification. As long as you do not modify HDMI-related hardware or change the underlying firmware, the end product does not need full ATC retesting – only derivative documentation, integration filing, and online listing – saving significant cost.
2. HDMI LA Licence Application – Core Required Documents
2.1 HDMI Adopter Agreement
To start HDMI certification, your company must sign the HDMI Adopter Agreement directly. The signatory must be the manufacturer of the final marketed product – agents and test labs cannot sign on your behalf. After signing, you receive a unique Adopter ID – all test reports, product filings, and trademark usage are tied to this account.
Practical note: Adopter accounts require annual fees. If you fall into arrears, all registered products under the account are delisted – you cannot legally use the HDMI logo.
HDCP authorisation – distinguish two scenarios:
HDCP is managed independently by DCP LLC – it is not automatically granted with HDMI Adopter status.
·Sink devices (displays, projectors) that decrypt external HDCP-encrypted video – must apply for a separate HDCP commercial licence. Without it, ATC labs cannot run HDCP handshake tests.
·Source devices that only play own content and do not decrypt external data – can use official test keys for HDCP testing – no DCP commercial licence required – avoid unnecessary costs.
2.2 Product Specification Sheet + CDF (Capability Declaration Form)
·Spec sheet must clearly list all HDMI parameters: interface version, TMDS/FRL data rate, HDCP version, eARC, CEC control, supported resolutions.
·CDF is the review core and the most frequently returned document. HDMI LA's judgements are based entirely on the CDF – sample functionality, EDID configuration, and hardware parameters must match the CDF exactly. Many companies provide incomplete specs – missing features – causing test scope gaps and later supplementary testing – adding time and cost.
2.3 ATC Authorised Lab Test Report
HDMI certification only accepts reports from HDMI LA-authorised ATC labs – reports from ordinary third-party labs are not accepted. Tests cover: physical-layer signal integrity, FRL link training, HDCP handshake, CEC interoperability, DDC/EDID communication – all mandatory HDMI protocol tests.
Automotive distinction: temperature-cycle, vibration, and reliability tests are OEM vehicle准入 requirements – not part of HDMI certification – do not submit them to HDMI LA.
2.4 Product Listing (Online Registration)
Common misconception: passing ATC testing means you can print the HDMI logo. Clarification:
·Signing the Adopter Agreement and paying annual fees only gives you the right to apply – not trademark usage rights.
·Full process: ATC testing → upload all documentation to HDMI LA system → approval → Product Listing completed.
·Only after successful listing can you legally use the HDMI logo for that model. Printing the logo before listing creates infringement risk.
3. Common HDMI Document Rejection Reasons
·ATC report missing valid signatures; report parameters inconsistent with CDF.
·Signatory without formal corporate authorisation; document format non-compliant.
·HDMI hardware or underlying firmware changes not reported – only housing/silkscreen changes within the same family do not require retesting.
·Trademark usage scenarios/scope not compliant with HDMI LA rules.
Timeline note: HDMI LA has no official expedited review channel. For Simplified Compliance (derivative) filings, review priority is higher than full new certification – shorter wait times. Once rejected, you re-queue – checking every document item before submission is the only way to control the timeline.
