HDMI 2.2 moved in two steps: previewed at CES on 6 January 2025, then formally released by the HDMI Forum on 25 June 2025. By 2026 it had replaced 2.1b as the current version.
But "the spec is current" and "the supply chain can use it" are two different things. The first Ultra96-certified product reached market only in the third quarter of 2026, and next-generation FRL2 chips only began sampling that year; terminals that run the full 96 Gbps are broadly expected around 2027. Keep the two rhythms separate when planning production.
Being current does not mean every product is tested to 2.2. The spec is backward compatible and open to all 2.1 adopters. The judging point is what bandwidth your product actually runs and whether it enables a 2.2-only feature.
Bandwidth rose from 48 Gbps to 96 Gbps, carried by the next-generation fixed-rate-link technology. It is not just the main chip — connectors, board material and trace routing all need their margins recomputed, and board changes are common. 2.2 defines three tiers at 64, 80 and 96 Gbps; not every 2.2 product runs the full 96.
Ultra96 is easily misread as "one 96 Gbps cable". Per the Forum, it is a feature name a vendor uses to show which of the 64, 80 or 96 Gbps tiers its product supports. Claim it and you must pair an Ultra96 cable that holds the bandwidth.
The Ultra High Speed cable, introduced in the 2.1 era and on sale since 2020, covers configurations up to 48 Gbps and cannot carry all 2.2 applications. Cable certification requires each model and each length to be tested and labelled separately — do not expect one report to cover the whole product line.
The Latency Indication Protocol is built for audio-video sync, especially in multi-hop systems — the kind with an amplifier or soundbar strung in the middle. Previously such setups fell out of alignment and relied on manual delay compensation; 2.2 moves that to the protocol layer.
The other enhancements carry over from the 2.1 framework: enhanced Audio Return Channel, Variable Refresh Rate, Auto Low Latency Mode, Quick Frame Transport and Quick Media Switch. Cable Power, added in 2.1a, lets an active cable draw power straight from the connector.
These are capabilities, not mandates; whether to turn them on depends on product positioning. What you must test follows the current conformance test specification and the functions you claim — and claiming a feature you skipped testing is the worse trouble.
Resolutions and refresh rates reach 12K at 120 Hz and 16K at 60 Hz, with 10K, 12K and 16K all on the support list. Note these top tiers are ceilings under compression — they need DSC visually-lossless compression to run, and 96 Gbps uncompressed cannot reach 16K at 60 Hz. Some online pieces say 2.2 has no 16K, which contradicts the Forum's announcement.
Uncompressed full chroma is a hard requirement: 8K at 60 Hz 4:4:4, 4K at 240 Hz 4:4:4, with 10-bit and 12-bit depth supported. For professional displays and high-end AV equipment, these two lines decide the main-chip selection directly.
Products tight on bandwidth margin often land below the nominal tier. The number on the spec sheet and the number on the test bench are not the same — run the measured bandwidth at the prototype stage before setting the marketing line.
The premise of implementation is becoming an Adopter; membership is maintained annually and tiered by annual shipment volume, not revenue — a point agents often state wrong.
The product must meet the spec version and the current conformance test specification. Test policy updates; Adopters check the current announcement on the extranet rather than scheduling this year's project against last year's flowchart.
Design changes need re-evaluation and supplementary compliance testing. The common practice: changing the connector supplier with unchanged electrical parameters goes through an internal archived evaluation; changing the main chip or redrawing the high-speed differential traces voids the original number and triggers a full retest. This tiering is practical experience, not a formal Forum classification — follow the Adopter agreement and HDMI LA's current guidance.
Do not expect one product passed and the rest exempt. Every model completes its own compliance test; a derivative model's test scope can be assessed for reduction, but skipping has no basis.

Do not follow the trend on version choice. Forcing 2.2 for the marketing line when the hardware margin cannot hold it only makes the test harder. File by the product's actual capability, which is steadier than filing by what the marketing needs.
