Document preparation is the key threshold for UN R156 application. This article sorts out full material checklist, certificate validity and renewal rules.
UN R156 includes SUMS system certification and VTA vehicle certification with separate document lists. SUMS is the mandatory precondition for VTA witness testing.
1.Complete SUMS Description DocumentSpecify software version coding rules, upgrade impact assessment standards, failure rollback mechanism, user notification process and cybersecurity protection measures.
2.Manufacturer Compliance DeclarationStandard template document signed and sealed by the manufacturer for official audit submission.
3.RxSWIN Management ArchivesVersion identification code mapping records and anti-tampering mechanism description for traceability audit.
4.Existing OTA Operation RecordsHistorical upgrade logs, user notification samples and exception handling records for on-site verification.
VTA Certification Required Documents
1.Valid SUMS certificate copy
2.Vehicle platform description and full upgradable ECU list
3.RxSWIN reading interface and protection mechanism specification
4.OTA package encryption, transmission and integrity verification documents
5.User notification workflow and document samples
6.Software update failure rollback and emergency handling plan
UN R156 Certificate Validity
1.SUMS Certificate: Valid for 3 years, regular renewal audit required 3 months before expiration. Active notification to certification body is mandatory for major system changes to avoid certificate revocation.
2.VTA Type Approval Certificate: Permanently valid if vehicle configuration, software design and regulation requirements have no major changes, no annual audit fee required.
SUMS Renewal Rules
Renewal audit is simpler than initial certification, focusing on system operation summary, version change records and exception statistics. It is recommended to start renewal preparation 3–4 months in advance.
