Certification is administered by the Wi-Fi Alliance, known across the trade as WFA. A product that passes enters the WFA product database with a dedicated certification ID, and that record is what channels and buyers use to check authenticity.
The nature of the scheme is worth pinning down early. This is a trademark and interoperability programme, not a mandatory regulation in any market. It only becomes unavoidable for products that advertise Wi-Fi and want to carry the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED mark. There is no fixed expiry date: certification follows the life of the equipment, provided the membership stays in good standing. Let the annual dues lapse and the mark can no longer be used.
The practical order of business in any enquiry is the same: establish whether the product carries a Wi-Fi radio before discussing whether WFA certification applies.
Any phone or tablet that advertises Wi-Fi goes through WFA. The 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands form the baseline, and models carrying 6E or Wi-Fi 7 run the 6 GHz cases on top. Model cycles are fast in this segment, so multi-model projects frequently use QuickTrack with a pre-certified module to save a testing round.
Notebooks, desktops and small form-factor machines with a Wi-Fi module all need certification. Enterprise tenders often treat Wi-Fi CERTIFIED as a gate. Where the module vendor has certified once, the system builder only has to complete derivative listing.
Routers, access points and mesh nodes carry complex RF designs, so multi-stream operation, multiple bands and beamforming are all tested. Devices using 6 GHz need the relevant Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 cases, and standard-power designs also have to cover the AFC interface testing.
Bulbs, plugs, sensors and door locks are all in scope, as are long-range, low-power Wi-Fi HaLow meters and sensors. These often run a simplified case set, but WPA3 remains a mandatory security baseline rather than something specific to door locks - no category escapes it. Cloud account and credential management for remote control sits outside the WFA programme, which covers the local wireless link only.
Wi-Fi connectivity in head units, telematics boxes and aftermarket units falls within scope. What WFA does not cover is automotive environmental testing such as wide-temperature and vibration testing, or automotive RF consistency. Those are added by the vehicle maker or the tier-one supplier, and the two budgets should not be merged into one.
Televisions, projectors, speakers and set-top boxes with Wi-Fi are certified too, with throughput and interoperability as the focus. Televisions are sensitive to fallback latency, so an audio-visual streaming scenario is run as a separate case.
6 GHz and AFC are two separate layers. DFS is the radar-avoidance requirement on 5 GHz and does not exist on 6 GHz. AFC should not be written off as a US rule either: the interface specification between an AFC device and an AFC system, along with the device-side compliance test plan, are WFA deliverables, and 6 GHz standard-power devices can complete that work alongside Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 6 testing at a WFA-recognised laboratory. What the FCC governs is how AFC systems operate and how the spectrum database is accessed. Keep the two layers apart when describing scope.
Wi-Fi 7 features are tested as declared. MLO, 320 MHz bandwidth and 4K-QAM are the headline additions, but the case list follows the features a product declares. A design without 320 MHz or without MLO carries no matching case, so nobody has to run all three simply because the product is Wi-Fi 7.
Membership tier decides which route is open. Member dues run at around US$25,000 for Contributor and around US$6,000 for Implementer, with small-business entry tiers available to companies under the revenue threshold: Small Business Introductory Participant at roughly US$7,725 with rights comparable to Contributor, and Small Business Introductory Implementer at roughly US$2,575, comparable to Implementer. The trap is that Implementer is positioned for integrating unmodified, already-certified modules; an in-house design has to move up to Contributor or to the small-business Participant tier. On routes, QuickTrack is built on certified modules and can be run at a member's own test site or at an authorised laboratory, while FlexTrack must be run at an authorised laboratory. The figures above cover membership dues only - product licensing fees and laboratory testing are charged separately, at the rates in force at the time.
Three decisions shape the cost of Wi-Fi certification more than anything else. Which module the design will use, because a pre-certified module opens the QuickTrack and derivative routes while an in-house RF design closes them. Which membership tier the company sits in, because an Implementer membership cannot submit an in-house design, and changing tier mid-programme costs more than choosing correctly at the start. And which features the product will actually claim, because the case list follows the declaration - claiming 320 MHz on a design that cannot deliver it adds testing with no commercial return.
