HDMI Certification Costs – 2026 Fee Breakdown

2026-08-10

Someone quotes RMB 20,000 – another quotes over USD 30,000 – same HDMI certification – how can the difference be so big?

It's not that someone is overcharging. HDMI certification is not a single fee – it's a collection of several separate cost items. Some people quote only test fees – others include royalties – different scopes = different totals.

一、HDMI Certification – Cost Breakdown

1. Membership fees

To start HDMI certification, register as an Adopter member on the HDMI LA website. Without membership, you can't even submit samples.

2026 pricing – two tiers:

·Standard: USD 10,000/year – unlimited product quantity – for factories producing over 5,000 units/year.

·Low‑volume: USD 5,000/year – for smaller manufacturers (under 5,000 units/year). Only quantities above the threshold incur a per‑unit administration fee – roughly USD 0.50–1.00/unitnot every unit – only the excess.

Must renew annually. If you miss renewal, membership is suspended – previously certified products can no longer use the HDMI trademark. After late payment, whether samples need to be re‑submitted – HDMI LA assesses case by case.

Trap: fees are calculated by join anniversary – not calendar year. In the first year, fees are prorated by remaining months – subsequent years are full‑year renewals. I've seen several people discover at renewal that it's not monthly‑prorated.

2. Test fees

This is where the flexibility lies.

Testing must be done at HDMI‑authorised ATCs – reports from non‑ATC labs are not accepted. Four ATCs in China: Simplay Labs (Shanghai/Shenzhen), GRL (Dongguan), Allion (Shenzhen), iST (Kunshan). Before sending samples, check the ATC's website to confirm they have testing capability for your HDMI version – not every ATC can do 2.1 high‑bandwidth.

HDMI 2.2 specification has been published – but compliance test standards are not yet available – in 2026, there is no formal 2.2 certification for end‑products yet. Chips are sampling this year – end‑products likely in 2027. For now, 8K high‑bandwidth still goes through 2.1.

Test fees by product complexity:

·Simple: USD 6,000–8,000. Cables, basic adapters – signal transmission only – 1–2 weeks.

·Consumer electronics: USD 10,000–15,000. TVs, monitors, set‑top boxes, game consoles – signal integrity, protocol conformance, HDCP 2.3 – 3–4 weeks.

·Complex: USD 18,000–25,000. 8K high‑refresh, in‑vehicle AV, smart splitters – bandwidth compatibility + automotive environmental testing – 4–8 weeks. In‑vehicle wide‑temperature adds 30–50% on top.

Pre‑testing before formal ATC submission: roughly RMB 1,000–10,000 – identifying issues early – reducing retest probability. But: pre‑test reports are not formal reports – they are two different things. I've seen people pass pre‑testing and assume they're safe – then fail at the ATC.

3. Royalties

HDMI LA charges per‑unit royalties – paid quarterly. It's not a one‑time certification fee.

2026 change: under the old Adopter agreement, printing the logo reduced the royalty to USD 0.05 – with HDCP, further reduced to USD 0.04. New agreements have eliminated this tiered discount – the royalty is now USD 0.15/unit – whether you print the logo or support HDCP – same rate. Existing agreements can still use the old rates.

Before budgeting, check your agreement version. Don't use old rates for mass‑production budgets. At 100,000 units/year, royalties alone are USD 15,000/year – for high‑volume products, this outweighs test fees.

4. HDCP – separate licensing

HDCP is managed by DCP LLC – completely separate from HDMI LA. ATC testing checks HDCP compatibility – but HDCP licensing fees are not included in ATC test fees. Don't assume they're naturally included.

Fees: DCP annual licence fee + key purchase fees – tiered by device type and annual volume. Cable products do not need HDCP keys – that cost is saved.

二、HDMI Certification – Where You Can Save

QDID reuse: using a pre‑certified chip or module can reduce some protocol testing. But whole‑product EDID adaptation, board‑level signal chain, and full‑product integration cannot be avoided – actual savings: roughly 20–40% of test man‑hours.

Family expansion: minor changes to the same series – no need for full retesting. Cost depends on the differences – typically 30–50% of the main model's cost – no official fixed percentage. Major changes = basically a full round.

Cable certification vs. device certification: passive copper cables – per‑model pricing. Active optical cables – add active‑circuit testing – cost increases 30–50%. In‑vehicle cables – add wide‑temperature and vibration – don't apply device‑certification standards.

One often overlooked: HDMI Logo placement – the rules are strict. Product body, packaging, manual, marketing images – size, position, colour, white space – all specified. HDMI LA conducts random checks – violations can suspend your membership. Before launch, run an internal Logo compliance check – doesn't cost much – fixing issues after launch is much more expensive.

   三、HDMI Certification Budget – Don't Miss These

·Royalties: quarterly shipment reports and payments. First‑year certification fees are calculated – but after mass production, many forget about royalties. For 1 million units/year, this gap is substantial.

·Payment currencies: membership and test fees can be paid in USD or RMB. Royalties are mainly USD‑denominated – with exchange‑rate fluctuations, leave room.

·Annual fee updates: HDMI LA updates fee schedules annually – check the website before your annual budget cycle. Using last year's table for this year's budget – I've seen too many people get caught.
